Title: Conflict and Crisis Advisor – (Conflict and Access Advisor) for Analysis and Research Unit

Duty Station: Gaziantep, Syria portfolio, Analysis and Research Unit

Duration: 1 year

In the context of the ongoing Syrian crisis, GIZ supports civil society actors within Syria as well as diaspora organisations and actors involved in the UN-led political process. The projects of the GIZ Syria Portfolio are implemented remotely. The Portfolio operates in a politically highly sensitive environment, requiring a regular monitoring of contextual dynamics, including security situation, political developments, and the socio-economic- and environmental dimensions of the conflict. Contextual analyses are conducted in the framework of the Analysis and Research Unit (ARU) of the Syria Portfolio. 

A. Main Activities

  • Technical management of commissioned studies, including setup of research design and advise on methodology for both qualitative and quantitative research.
  • Advising GIZ Syria Portfolio on risk assessments for proposed implementation and incident reporting of ongoing partner activities.
  • Conduct regular briefings and presentations to GIZ and commissioning parties on situational developments inside Syria.
  • Analysis of large quantitative datasets on security incidents.
  • Mapping of security incidents, armed actor presence, frontlines, population mobility, and critical infrastructure of geographical implementation areas inside Syria.
  • Representing GIZ in local and regional coordination fora
  • Drafting situational analyses on political and strategic developments in Syria to inform GIZ programming and in response to commissioning parties’ requests for information.

B. Required qualifications, competencies and experience

Education/Qualifications

Master’s degree or academic equivalent in Political Science, International Relations, Peace and Conflict Studies, Area Studies, or related field and/or education/training in a field/specialization related to conflict analysis.

Professional experience

  • Comprehensive understanding of the Syrian context
  • Strong understanding of the coordination architecture of the Syria response
  • Strong technical understanding of implementation in fragile contexts

Other knowledge, additional competencies

Fluency in English (particularly writing) and Arabic. German is desirable.
