The project BRIDGE – Strengthening the Capacity of the Civil Society is implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

BRIDGE focuses on the necessary planning, implementation, and networking skills of civil society actors for change processes at the local level. Accordingly, the overall objective is: Civil society organizations, women, and young people, as agents of change, have made better use of the remaining room to manoeuvre for social participation within Syria. One output of the project aims to improve the public discourse on development engagement at community level and to have a greater presence of development-related issues. Focus is here on women and young people and on the local media, to increase the social awareness of the target group’s interests and to inspire others for more active community engagement.

A. Main Responsibilities

Capacity Building, Coordination and Networking

  • Identifies and categorizes Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) inside Syria including women and youth groups, local community initiatives
  • Conducts assessments to understand the unique needs and challenges of these CSOs
  • Creates targeted engagement strategies that address the specific needs and interests of CSOs ensuring capacity building and empowerment
  • Develops clear and culturally sensitive communication plans and capacitates CSOs in developing project activities
  • Organizes (virtual) workshops, skill-building sessions, mentorship programs, and networking events to empower and to capacitate CSOs and to enhance their professional growth
  • Encourages collaboration among these CSOs to create a supportive ecosystem that promotes youth and women’s economic empowerment opportunities
  • Develops documentations, manuals, reports, and guidelines

Implementation of project activities and project management

  • Provides technical guidance and support to civil society partners in the design, implementation, and monitoring of inclusive projects relevant to women and youth empowerment
  • Follows up the technical implementation of the contracts with partners remotely
  • Follows up the partners’ reporting and indicators and providing feedback to partners
  • Advises the implementing Partners in the implementation of their respective projects and the related activities
  • Feeds the project team on challenges and success of the projects.
  • Ensures close cooperation with the finance and M&E colleagues to fulfill the project requirements

B. Required qualifications, competencies, and experience

Education

  • University degree (BA/ BSc, MA/ MSc, PhD) in Social Sciences or related field

Professional Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience (organizational capacity building, project management etc.) in a similar position with an international or national organization or institution
  • Thematic Knowledge and experiences on youth and women empowerment
  • Experience in conflict analysis and stakeholder mapping; profound knowledge of the Syrian conflict necessary
  • Substantial and granular knowledge of dynamics of Syrian civil society (inside and diaspora)

Other Knowledge and Additional Competencies

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with strong ability to multi-task and deliver quality work on time under pressure
  • Ability to keep track of and reconcile multiple data sources with minimum error
  • Highly collaborative, team player and experienced in working in multi-cultural organizations and in a fast-paced environment
  • Reliable with confidential information and materials
  • Ability to work in an international multicultural team with loyalty, reliability, and tolerance
  • High motivation and ability to work independently and meet deadlines without compromising the quality of outputs
  • Excellent written and spoken English and Arabic, knowledge of German and Turkish is an asset
  • Interest and ability to flexibly learn and adapt to new concepts
